In an effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has devised a plan to convert the city's entire fleet of taxicabs into hybrids. At this point, the city has quite a long way to go. Currently only 375 out of the 13,000 total taxis are eco-friendly. However, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission is making good headway. The organization recently placed a small fleet of Nissan LEAF EV cabs on the Big Apple streets. This group is part of a testing initiative called the Electric Taxi Pilot Program. Cab owners who chose to participate received a new LEAF taxi at no cost and may call the vehicle their own for up to a year.
