City Dwellers Go Green with Nissan LEAF Taxi

When thinking about the greenest places on earth, let's be honest, New York City doesn't exactly spring to the forefront of your mind. With such a high population density, it's rather difficult for the city to remain green and clean. The good news is that with a great amount of people comes a great opportunity for change. In this case, we're talking 13,000 taxis worth of change. Confused yet? Allow Jenkins Nissan to explain.

In an effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has devised a plan to convert the city's entire fleet of taxicabs into hybrids. At this point, the city has quite a long way to go. Currently only 375 out of the 13,000 total taxis are eco-friendly. However, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission is making good headway. The organization recently placed a small fleet of Nissan LEAF EV cabs on the Big Apple streets. This group is part of a testing initiative called the Electric Taxi Pilot Program. Cab owners who chose to participate received a new LEAF taxi at no cost and may call the vehicle their own for up to a year.

If you ask us, using the Nissan model is a pretty wise choice on the part of New York City officials. While the model's limited ranges may cause concern for some drivers, they are perfect for urban-dwellers needing to travel short distances as quickly as possible. In addition, the Nissan LEAF has no need for petrol, produces zero-emissions and comes with a 5-Star overall safety rating.

Not quite convinced that EV is the way to go? That's okay, Jenkins Nissan understands that not everyone is ready to make the switch.
