What is a Differential?

The next time you turn a corner while driving your vehicle, think about how that’s able to happen. The differential in a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) auto provides the two rear wheels the ability to maneuver around turns without skidding or slipping.

It’s comprised of a set of gears housed in the rear of the vehicle between the two axles. The gears synchronize the speed and direction of each wheel, so your turn is as seamless as possible. The inside wheels, those closest to the turn, only need to make a small arc to get around the corner. The outside wheels, on the opposite side of the vehicle, have a lot of work to do to catch up to the inside wheels. They need to make a wide arc, and at a faster rate, to turn at the same time.

Regular maintenance on the differential is important to keep it good-running order. We are happy to answer your questions. Stop in to Jenkins Nissan when you’re in Lakeland.
